ROUND 17 | SINGAPORE

"We will continue pushing and be ready to go again in Austin"

Singapore GP header portrait

The triple-header concluded at the infamous Marina Bay Street Circuit, where Fernando finished P16 at the Singapore Grand Prix, while Lance's race unfortunately came to an end after a clutch issue.

Read on to get the thoughts of our drivers.

  • Due to setup changes made overnight, both cars began the race from the pitlane. Our drivers had similar strategies, starting on the Softs.

  • Lance pitted on Lap 27. He returned to the track on Mediums in P20.

  • Fernando's pitstop came at the end of Lap 35, also switching to Mediums.

  • The overheating of Lance's clutch meant his race came to an end after 36 laps, resulting in a Virtual Safety Car. When the VSC ended, Fernando was running in P16, and he held onto this position until the end of the race.

  • Next up, we're making our way to Circuit of the Americas for the United States Grand Prix on 23-25 October to begin another triple-header. Check back here for full coverage.

We'll continue working hard overnight to understand where we can improve.

"I'm a little disappointed to finish P15, as I felt we put together a very good lap.

"I felt comfortable in the car, but we were still dealing with a few issues that we weren't able to resolve due to only one practice session.

"We'll continue working hard overnight to understand where we can improve and hopefully find some more performance ahead of both the Sprint and Qualifying tomorrow."

We couldn't get the car in the right window for Sprint Qualifying.

"On paper, Singapore should see us perform similar to Malaysia but we couldn't get the car in the right window for Sprint Qualifying.

"I struggled to get a good feeling of the car here so far and didn't have overtake mode available on my second push lap so missed out on any chances fighting to get through to Q2."

We got the most out of the car and took advantage of other cars' retirements to finish P11.

"Today in the Sprint, we got the most out of the car and took advantage of other cars' retirements to finish P11.

"Unfortunately, Qualifying was more of the same as yesterday's Sprint Qualifying, and we could only manage P17.

"My final run was clean, and everything was well managed by the team, but the pace just wasn't there again. As a result of that, we have taken the decision to replace the PU overnight."

The car didn’t feel great today; it's a bumpy track and these tracks are tough for our car.

"It's not our weekend so far. We're not performing here as expected.

"The car didn’t feel great today; it's a bumpy track and these tracks are tough for our car.

"We didn't manage to capitalise on any opportunities during the Sprint as I had to retire the car early after making contact with another car.

"In Qualifying, we hit traffic during my final push lap, and there was some confusion about Valtteri Bottas in front of me aborting his push lap, where we lost a lot of time."

We will have to prepare well and be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that come our way.

"A difficult day for us here in Singapore.

"We had mixed fortunes in the Sprint where Lance made contact with Sergio Pérez which put him out early, whilst Fernando made up four places to finish in P11.

"In tonight's Qualifying, we did not have the pace to make it beyond Q1.

"We will change Fernando's PU based on his feedback. Tomorrow will be a long race where everything can happen, we will have to prepare well and be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that come our way."

We struggled with driveability throughout the weekend. Hopefully we can get on top of these issues before the next triple-header.

"It was a difficult weekend overall, not just the race.

"We knew starting from the pit lane would make things difficult, especially at a circuit where overtaking is not easy. I did what I could, but we didn't have the pace to fight for much more.

The clutch overheated so we had to retire on Lap 39.

"We made some setup changes overnight so started from the pit lane today.

"We had driveability issues during the race, and then the clutch overheated so we had to retire on Lap 39.

We will regroup, continue pushing and be ready to go again in Austin.

"If you start from the pitlane on a circuit like Singapore, it was clear that we were going to have a very challenging evening.

"Both drivers pushed hard and extracted everything they could from the car. Fernando climbed to P16, while Lance unfortunately had to retire with a clutch issue.

"We will regroup, continue pushing and be ready to go again in Austin. To the whole team, but especially the crews in the garage and hospitality, thank you for the hard work and commitment over the last three weeks."

Into the night

The Singapore Grand Prix changed F1. It arrived in 2008, revitalising the notion of a street race in a bustling metropolis, now commonly referred to as a 'destination event', and it did it at night, meeting a technical and logistic challenge that had never before been attempted. It was wildly popular, very exciting and genuinely illuminating.

And while the race is now a known quantity, it still carries that air of excitement, when the lights take hold and the grandstands fill around the Marina Bay Street Circuit… but this year the Singapore Grand Prix is a little different, as we're having our first Sprint weekend in the Lion City.

It's one of the most challenging races, especially in terms of physicality, and usually the longest race, with extreme heat and at night, so we require ultimate concentration.
