RACE REACTION
Australia sunday header portrait

Melbourne set the stage for the start of Formula One's 77th season. During a windy Australian Grand Prix, our drivers gathered information over a combined 64 laps.

Keep reading to hear from Fernando, Lance and Adrian following the season's opening race.

  • Fernando and Lance began the Australian Grand Prix from P17 and P22 respectively. On the Soft tyre, Fernando climbed several positions during the opening corners, reaching P10 by the end of the first lap.

  • On Lap 12, a Virtual Safety Car began. Both drivers took advantage and made pitstops, with Fernando switching to new Softs, while Lance, who had been running on Mediums, opted for Hards.

  • Upon the Green Flag on Lap 14, Fernando was instructed to bring the car into the pits to assess it. 11 laps later, he rejoined the race to collect additional data.

  • At the end of Lap 27, Lance pitted and switched to Soft tyres.

  • Fernando came into the pits to retire the car on Lap 35 to conserve components. A lap later, Lance also came into the pits before returning to the track during the closing stages, 12 laps behind the other cars. He switched to fresh Softs for the final three laps to conclude the race.

We have a big challenge to improve our reliability and performance, but everyone is working flat-out to improve our situation.

"We didn't complete many laps today as we suffered with PU issues. We need to learn as much as possible about this car and we need more laps to be able to do this.

It's been a tough weekend so far with a few issues that have kept us from getting the laps we needed.

"It's been a tough weekend so far with a few issues that have kept us from getting the laps we needed. The team in the garage have been working really hard, but there just wasn't enough time to get the car rebuilt before Qualifying.

"We're not where we want to be at the moment, but we'll keep pushing and keep working to improve."

There is potential in the car, so it’s clear we need more mileage.

"We ran trouble free in FP3 and seemed to unlock a lot of lap-time in Qualifying by just running more laps.

"There is potential in the car, so it’s clear we need more mileage. We are short on batteries and so can’t risk too much tomorrow, but hopefully we can do as many laps as possible.

"We face this challenge together and everybody in the team and in Honda have been working flat-out to improve this situation."

Another very busy day in Melbourne as we continue to make progress with the AMR26.

"Another very busy day in Melbourne as we continue to make progress with the AMR26 working with our technical partner, Honda.

"Fernando was able to run important laps in final practice, giving us valuable data and information heading into Qualifying. Fernando qualified in P17 – just missing out on Q2 – and it is clear there is lots of hard work ahead of us.

"Lance was unlucky today with an ICE issue keeping his car in the garage during practice. After those issues were resolved, there was not enough time to rebuild the car and take part in Qualifying.

"It is clear the AMR26 has the pace to compete, so we will discuss with the FIA tonight our options for running Lance tomorrow.”

The laps we managed today should give us a bit more direction going into China.

"It was good to get some kilometres in the car today, especially after missing pretty much all the track running this weekend.

"We used the race as a learning session and stopped for several laps to check things over in the garage before heading back out.

"There's still quite a bit missing in terms of performance and reliability, but the laps we managed today should give us a bit more direction going into China."

Next weekend will be another good opportunity to get mileage and optimise things.

"The first two laps were the most enjoyable part of the race for me. We had a good start and ended up P10 which was unexpected. We were then out of position and so we fell back.

"We then brought the car into the garage to check things over and went back out before we had to retire the car. China next weekend will be another good opportunity to get mileage and optimise things."

Today was primarily an opportunity to learn more about the AMR26.

"Today was primarily an opportunity to learn more about the AMR26.

"Both cars took the start and, when it became clear we could not compete for points, we chose to pit and check the cars over.

"The team then asked Fernando to retire the car to preserve components. The data and learnings from this weekend will help us as we go into the next event."

Welcome to Melbourne

Every season, the first Grand Prix presents many unknowns – this year more than most following the biggest change to the sport's regulations in a generation. But however the opening race weekend unfolds, this isn't going to be a season where the opening races set the pattern for the rest of the year.

What is guaranteed at Melbourne's Albert Park is a huge and knowledgeable crowd, with F1 the centrepiece of a huge festival of motorsport, spread across four days. Supercars, Formula 2, Formula 3 and more demonstrations and parades than you can shake a vintage DB5 conrod at, with paddocks and display stands spread across the park.

It's also not all about F1 in Albert Park for us this weekend. After an excellent third place in the Formula 3 Championship, Mari Boya takes the step-up and contests, with Prema, his first F2 race. Instantly a winner when he joined our Driver Academy part-way through 2025, our Spanish junior has his sights set on bigger and better in 2026.
