Round 16 | Bahrain

"Four points and our best result of the year"

GRAND PRIX REACTION
Bahrain GP header Saturday portrait

Amid adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain, heat and humidity, our team claimed four points at Sepang International Circuit.

Read on for all the reaction from the trackside team in Malaysia.

  • Rain resulted in a 100-minute delay to the Bahrain Grand Prix. Parts of the circuit dried quickly as a result of 34°C track temperatures, while other areas remained wet.

  • The race began behind the Safety Car before a standing start. Though our drivers had initially both began on Mediums, the wet parts of the track resulted in split strategies; Lance pitted for Intermediates ahead of the start, while Fernando stayed out on the dry tyres.

  • Intermediates proved to be ideal during the opening laps; by the end of Lap 5, Lance had climbed to P13 and Fernando was running in P16.

  • A Safety Car on Lap 9 was an opportunity for our drivers to pit – both for Hard tyres. Racing resumed on Lap 12, with Lance and Fernando running in P11 and P18 respectively, and Fernando began climbing up the order.

  • Our drivers pitted again at the race's midpoint for another set of Hards, returning to the track in P13 and P14.

  • Fernando claimed P11 with an overtake on Esteban Ocon on Lap 36. Four laps later, he passed Arvid Lindblad and entered the points positions.

  • A Virtual Safety Car on Lap 43 allowed Lance to pit for Softs while maintaining position. Shortly after, a full Safety Car period began, and Fernando also made a pitstop without losing time.

  • Issues for George Russell and Lando Norris meant Fernando climbed to P8. He defended well from Norris during the final few laps and crossed the line to secure P8 and four valuable points. Lance finished just outside of the points in P12.

  • The triple header concludes on 9-11 October with the Singapore Grand Prix.

We do need to work on finding more grip and optimising the setup of the car for the rest of the weekend.

"We haven't had time to analyse anything in depth as we have just got out of the car.

"We do need to work on finding more grip and optimising the setup of the car for the rest of the weekend. There is a lot of tyre degradation with extreme temperatures and a rough tarmac."

Coming back to Malaysia after such a long time, there were many unknowns, but we got two decent sessions in today.

"Coming back to Malaysia after such a long time, there were many unknowns, but we got two decent sessions in today and managed to complete our Friday programme.

"Sepang is obviously a very different track to last weekend and we came here expecting the track characteristics to suit our package a bit more than Baku so hopefully we can show some more competitiveness here.

"Nevertheless, it’s only Friday and we still have work to do, especially with the car balance on Lance’s side.

"Fernando seemed okay with the car balance today. He mainly reported issues with low grip of the tarmac but that’s the same issue for everyone else so we just have to adapt to that. But it will be challenging for the drivers and it also means it’s easy to make mistakes."

Let's try have some fun and see what we can do in the race.

"It was our best Qualifying so far this season and we were about 1.5 seconds from the front in Q2 which is the closest we've been all year.

"The car is the same as previous races and it's clear we lack performance on the straights, but we do seem to be better suited to this track.

"Tyre management will be a big factor tomorrow, so let's try have some fun and see what we can do in the race."

It clicked for me during the second push lap in Q1 and came together much better.

"We made it through to Q2 and qualified in P14. That's our most competitive result of this year so far.

"It clicked for me during the second push lap in Q1 and came together much better.

"I felt more comfortable in the car during Qualifying than in the practice sessions, although there were some mistakes in Q2 and I think we could've gotten slightly more out of it. But we will see what tomorrow brings.

"I didn't do many long runs on Friday and it will be tricky conditions with the hot temperatures, the track surface and the tyre degradation."

We need to stay focused, execute well and maximise every opportunity that comes our way.

"A positive result today, with Fernando in P12 and Lance in P14. Both cars made it into Q2, giving us our best qualifying performance of the year.

"We've enjoyed coming to Sepang, and the low-grip conditions seem to have slightly changed the pecking order, allowing us to be more competitive from the start of practice yesterday.

"Tomorrow will be a tough challenge, with the hot conditions and a high possibility of rain showers late in the afternoon. We need to stay focused, execute well and maximise every opportunity that comes our way."

We have been more competitive this weekend and P8 is a good result for us.

"We have been more competitive this weekend and P8 is a good result for us.

"There were a lot of things that happened in the race. We started with the dry tyres and put ourselves in a difficult position, but thankfully the Safety Car started a new race for us.

"There are not many weekends where we can score points, so we executed well and took the opportunity.

"Let's see if we can keep up this pace into Singapore where on paper we have some hope. The issues at the start were quite strange and we need to understand what happened there."

It was fun being out there today and battling with other cars.

"We came to Malaysia knowing this track would suit our car slightly better – less power and grip limited so that helped us.

"It was fun being out there today and battling with other cars.

"The weather conditions were very tricky and I think we missed some good racing with the delayed start. But I was surprised how slippery it was when I first got out there so I came in and switched to Inters, which was the right choice.

"The Hard tyre seemed very robust, and I think I could have pushed the second set we used more in hindsight. That's where we lost a couple of positions and finished outside the points."

It's great to score four points and achieve our best result of the year.

"It's great to score four points and achieve our best result of the year, with Fernando in P8 and Lance in P12.

"Both drivers were in the mix throughout the afternoon, executing some strong overtakes and making the most of the opportunities that came their way.

"It's encouraging to convert the speed we showed in Qualifying into race results.

"So much happened this afternoon, from the rainy conditions to the delayed start, so we need to conduct a thorough review of how things played out and some of the decisions we made.

"It's also important that we thank Bahrain and Malaysia for their fantastic collaboration in making this race possible with just a couple of months' notice."

Stepping into the breach

Slightly more than half of the world's racing circuits with an FIA Grade 1 classification host races on the original 2026 F1 calendar. Of those that remain, once unsuitable candidates for reasons of geography, climate and politics were removed, there remained a handful capable of stepping into the breach at short notice to host a Grand Prix. As far back as March, planners were beginning to pull down their file marked 'Sepang', and leaf through it thoughtfully...

On Sunday morning at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the worst-kept secret in the F1 paddock became official: the Sepang International Circuit would be hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on 4 October. It turns the previously standalone Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix into the bookends of a triple-header. That brings with it complexities for the teams that won't be visible from the outside – but it also allows F1 to return to a much-enjoyed circuit that last hosted a Grand Prix in 2017.

ONE OF MY GREATEST RACES
The level of energy that I had to put into that race. The level of focus, and to instinctively come up with a solution to a problem that was never tested or experienced; I think it was quite a race to remember.
