Round 02 | China

"We have lots of work ahead of us in all areas"

RACE REACTION
Chinese GP mobile hero - Sunday

Sunday in Shanghai proved very challenging as we recorded a double DNF in the Chinese Grand Prix. Read on for the reaction from the team trackside.

  • Our drivers were promoted four places at lights out as issues for Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, and Gabriel Bortoleto meant they could not take the start.

  • Fernando, as he was in Melbourne, was quick off the mark and found himself in P10 at the end of the first lap, though would soon after begin to drop down the running order.

  • Both drivers started on the Hard tyre, with the view to utilising a one-stop strategy.

  • Unfortunately, a suspected battery issue brought Lance's race to an end on lap 10.

  • On lap 34, Fernando also had to retire after feeling discomfort in the cockpit due to vibrations.

  • Finally, in F1 ACADEMY, Mathilda Paatz finished P11 in Race Two of the opening round of the championship.

We are still battling the same issues we had a week ago in Melbourne.

“We gathered important data so that's a positive, but we are still battling the same issues we had a week ago in Melbourne.

"Ultimately, we don't want to be fighting for P19 so there's lots for us to work on, but we came to China with the main objective to continue learning more about the car."

We will try to improve again tomorrow and complete as many laps as we can.

"We did some laps in Free Practice and only managed SQ1 today.

"I think we did the best we could and we are still far away from the others.

"We will try to improve again tomorrow, complete as many laps as we can, and build our understanding of this package."

We are learning with each lap and need to continue building mileage.

"A challenging Qualifying session for me today.

"I struggled with the balance, suffering with understeer and rear wheel locking which makes the car unpredictable to drive.

"We need to look at the data to see where we can improve. We are learning with each lap and need to continue building mileage and understanding of this car to get on top of some of the challenges we face."

I felt like I got everything out of the car in Qualifying.

"I felt like I got everything out of the car in that Qualifying session and I think it was the best that we could manage.

"It was a trouble-free day for us and we did everything we wanted to do in our programme, but we are simply lacking performance.

"We will aim to finish the race tomorrow and try to learn more about this package in racing conditions."

Both cars have run reliably today and given us important data.

"Both cars have done more laps here in Shanghai, but we were not able to progress beyond Q1.

"We continue learning and building our knowledge about this car, which will help us find more performance for the races to come.

"Both cars have run reliably today and given us important data, but the car is not easy to drive, so we will regroup tonight to see where we can make improvements going forward."

We have lots of work ahead of us in all areas.

"The car just switched off going into T1. We need to look into it, but suspect it was a battery-related issue.

"Overall, we've done more laps this weekend, collected more data and learned more about the car and the engine so that's a positive to take from China.

"We have lots of work ahead of us in all areas and need to push for improvements. It's not an easy time for the team, but we're all working together and there is a lot of potential to unlock."

The vibrations seemed worse today than on any other day of the weekend.

"I had fun at the start again and it seems this is a strong point of our car as we jumped up to P10.

"However, from about lap 20 I was struggling with the vibration levels, and we were already one lap down, so in the end we decided to retire the car.

"The vibrations seemed worse today than on any other day of the weekend, so we need to investigate why that was. It's clear we need more time to fix everything, but we'll go again in two weeks' time in Japan."

We take away a lot of data and learning from this race.

"Neither car completed today's race.

"Lance's car experienced a suspected battery issue and stopped on lap 10. Fernando's race ended on lap 34 when we retired the car due to discomfort from vibrations. That's something we are working with Honda to improve.

"We take away a lot of data and learning from this race, which we will apply as we prepare for Japan."

Welcome to Shanghai

Following the claustrophobic confines of Albert Park, the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit presents a rather different environment to see F1's new era. The second half of the season-opening double header features long straights and a mix of sweeping corners and tight turns – all set against a background that features one of the world's most vibrant, 24-hour Alpha Cities.

It's going to be an intense weekend with just one practice session ahead of the first Sprint race of the year. We’re also getting a first chance to see Mathilda Paatz competing in Aston Martin Racing Green colours. Our newest Driver Academy recruit begins her first full F1 ACADEMY campaign this weekend, racing for 2025 champions PREMA Racing. She featured as a wildcard entry in last year's Montréal rounds, but this year represents a big step forwards.
