ROUND 03 | JAPAN

"A significant moment for the team"

GRAND PRIX REACTION
Japanese GP portrait Sunday

At the formidable Suzuka Circuit, the team completed race distance with Fernando classifying P18.

Read on to get the reaction of the team trackside.

  • Fernando and Lance began the Japanese Grand Prix from P21 and P22 respectively and both made up a place during the opening laps.

  • Both drivers made their first stint on the Medium compound.

  • On Lap 22, our drivers both pitted under a Safety Car period, switching onto the Hard compound. They then each made a second pitstop under the Safety Car for Medium tyres. When the race resumed on Lap 27, Lance was running in P19 and Fernando in P20.

  • Lance was called into the pits on Lap 31 after a suspected water pressure issue and unfortunately had to retire from the race.

  • Completing full race distance around the recently-resurfaced Suzuka Circuit, Fernando concluded in P18.

  • We'll return to the track on 1-3 May for the Miami Grand Prix.

I'm happy I could support the team by gathering valuable data on the AMR26.

"It was great to get out on track today in Suzuka.

"I've never driven here before, but my simulator work really helped me get up to speed quickly.

We will now look at the data and see what we can learn for tomorrow.

"I always enjoy coming back to Suzuka. It's a very special track and the atmosphere here is amazing.

"We managed to get through our full run programme and will now look at the data and see what we can learn for tomorrow.

I always enjoy driving here, so tomorrow we will try to maximise everything.

"A tough Qualifying for us today here in Suzuka. This circuit exposes our current limitations, and that was clear on track.

"Despite the Q1 exit, we have still been able to build mileage across the sessions, which is important for gathering data and understanding the car better.

"I always enjoy driving here, so tomorrow we will try to maximise everything and see what's possible."

We have a good idea of the areas we need to work on during the next couple of months.

"I had some energy management issues on the last run in Q1 and lost a couple of tenths there so will start the race tomorrow from the back.

"The goal for the race is to see the chequered flag and get over the finish line, so our focus remains on reliability until we sort out our current issues.

"We have a good idea of the areas we need to work on during the next couple of months and we know that's not going to be an overnight fix and will take time."

We have made some incremental improvements, and we are in better shape compared to Friday.

"We know that our performance is not where it needs to be right now and this was always going to be a challenging weekend.

"Nonetheless, both Lance and Fernando pushed hard in today's Qualifying session as they each completed three runs in Q1.

"Although we could not progress to Q2, we have made some incremental improvements, and we are in better shape compared to Friday.

"The focus now is to complete a race distance and build on the reliability we have shown leading up to the race."

Finishing the race here in Suzuka today shows clear progress for the team.

"Finishing the race here in Suzuka today shows clear progress for the team, and that's a strong positive we should take from the weekend.

"While we didn't have the pace, it was still enjoyable to gain valuable mileage and to race with Lance.

"We'll now analyse the data across both Silverstone and Sakura and continue pushing development, so we have a better understanding heading into Miami."

Suzuka is always a fun track to drive.

"I was enjoying the race today, even though we were not competitive and battling for the last few positions.

"Suzuka is always a fun track to drive so it was a shame we couldn't make it to the end.

"We still need to investigate, but it looks like a water pressure issue on the ICE. I was having a fun race up until that point, defending from Fernando, but it's clear we have a lot of things to work on and need to find a lot of speed.

"We know the issues we have so it's about tackling those as quickly as we can."

I want to thank the drivers for their determination and racing spirit today.

"The objective today was to complete a race distance, which we achieved with Fernando in P18. That is a significant moment for the team and our technical partner, Honda, at their home race.

"We have shown reliability is improving, but the water pressure issue on the ICE of Lance’s car [on lap 30] shows there is still much work to be done.

"It’s also clear the performance level of our package is far from where it needs to be and we must work hard to deliver improvements.

"I want to thank the drivers for their determination and racing spirit today."

Welcome to Japan

Japan is steeped in racing culture, and nowhere more so than Suzuka. Every corner is a masterpiece with names that trip off the tongue: Spoon; 130R; the Esses. It has the most enthusiastic fans and presents an opportunity for visitors to experience a culture quite unlike their own: Fernando and Jenson love it, having a profound affinity with samurai warriors and Japanese culture, respectively.

This is a home race and a homecoming for the team, as our works power unit partner, Honda, makes its return to F1 at the circuit that was created in the early 1960s as a Honda test track. Still owned by Honda, the figure-eight track in Mie Prefecture provides one of the sternest tests of F1 machinery and offers perhaps a better opportunity to show off the capabilities of the new cars than was the case in Albert Park and Shanghai.

This weekend is also the final time before the summer months that we'll see the three standard practice sessions. This is an opportunity to learn a lot about the AMR26, but also a chance to get Third Driver Jak Crawford into the car. Jak will be taking over Fernando's seat for FP1 on Friday morning, before Fernando gets back in for the afternoon.
