Round 04 | Miami

"We have taken an important step forward"

GRAND PRIX REACTION
Miami GP Sunday mobile hero

Fernando finished in P15 with Lance in P17 as the Formula One season resumed with the Miami Grand Prix. Read on for all the reaction from the team trackside in Florida.

  • The Grand Prix began at 13:00 local time, having been brought forward three hours to avoid forecasted heavy storms at the original start time.

  • Despite torrential rain earlier in the morning, our drivers took to the grid in dry conditions, both starting on the Medium tyre compound.

  • After lights out, an early Safety Car period was called as Isack Hadjar had an off, while Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson came together in a separate incident, with the field bunching up. Neither driver took to the pits.

  • Lance made his first stop on Lap 20, taking on a set of Soft tyres. He would pit again for another set of Softs on Lap 37.

  • Fernando, meanwhile, went longer and pitted on Lap 41, also taking the Soft tyre.

  • At the chequered flag, Fernando crossed the line in P15, with Lance in P17.

  • Earlier in the day, Driver Academy member Mari Boya took P7 in the F2 Feature Race, expertly navigating tricky wet conditions to carve his way into the points.

  • The team's focus now moves up the Eastern Seabord and over the border to Montréal for the Canadian Grand Prix in three weeks.

We need to understand why both cars suffered front locking issues.

"A tricky Friday for us in Miami – I was hoping to get one or two push laps in during Sprint Qualifying today, but unfortunately suffered from front locking so didn't set a time. We need to look into it and understand why both cars suffered this issue.

"There's lots for us to look at and work on overnight ahead of tomorrow, let's see what learnings we can find."

A tough Friday for the team here in Miami.

"A tough Friday for the team here in Miami.

"Honda have made some improvements on the vibrations since the first few races, but we're still lacking pace.

"It's a process that will take time, and we need to stay patient. We'll look at the data tonight and try to make the most of the rest of the weekend."

We had some issues with traffic on the last run in Q1.

"It feels like we've made some small progress since Sprint Qualifying yesterday.

"We had some issues with traffic on the last run in Q1 and didn't get the tyres in the right window so we lost time there.

"We know the areas we need to work on and improve, but that's going to take time.

"We'll see what we can do tomorrow, the weather will play a big factor for everyone."

It's a relief that the PU vibration issues have improved.

"I feel performance in Qualifying improved a little compared to yesterday and the Sprint, and it's a relief that the PU vibration issues have improved which was a big focus over the break.

"Unfortunately, we had some gearbox issues which limited us, so we need to understand them tonight and try to fix things for tomorrow.

"We haven't run in the wet yet, so if the weather changes it will be a learning experience for us and everyone on the grid. Let's see what we can do."

From a reliability perspective we've made a step in the right direction.

"It's the first time this season both cars finished a race, so that's a positive to take from Miami.

"We managed to get more mileage in the car and experienced fewer vibrations this weekend.

"In hindsight, our tyre strategy didn't work out but from a reliability perspective we've made a step in the right direction.

"We now need to work on our performance-related issues. There are lots of areas for us to improve on."

It's good to have both cars finish the race for the first time this season.

"It's good to have both cars finish the race for the first time this season.

"We are still not where we want to be, but this weekend has allowed us to collect more data which we can analyse over the next few weeks before Canada.

"We have made clear progress in reliability, now our focus turns to performance. We need to keep working and be patient as a team."

Our focus over the break was to work with Honda to improve the PU's vibrations.

[["Our focus over the break was to work with Honda to improve the PU's vibrations into the chassis. That work has paid off and we have taken an important step forward on reliability this weekend.

"While that is a positive, there's clearly more we need to do together to improve our pace and unlock the potential of this package."]]

Welcome to Magic City

Sweeping around the imposing Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Grand Prix is a modern showpiece event on the F1 calendar. It is loud, it is crowded, it is impossible to move, and the garages offer the only sanctuary of calm to be found amid the whirl of music, fashion, art and food. The challenging, 19-turn, purpose-built temporary circuit provides the stage for a Sprint weekend in the 305.

Some people come to the Miami International Autodrome to watch the race, while others come to just watch each other. If you want to kick back under a big umbrella, watching F1 while nonchalantly sipping a Glenfiddich Orchard Experiment Pomonatini from a coupette glass, then this is definitely the race for you, but for the former category, the track around the Hard Rock Stadium really is spectacular, offering equal opportunity for spectacular overtaking and colossal drama. What the enormous torque of this new era of F1 cars makes of it is going to be very interesting to discover – though we'll have considerably less time than usual to find out, as the F1 Sprint returns for its second appearance of 2026.

This isn't entirely the weekend as originally planned. The singular practice session has been extended to 90 minutes, to allow teams a little more time to adapt to a tweaked set of rules regarding energy recovery, while it's a considerably busier weekend on track, with Formula 2 given a Miami, and indeed, North American, debut. Mari Boya will be back in action for the first time since the Australian Grand Prix weekend back at the start of March, hoping to kickstart his campaign in Florida.
