Round 10 | Belgium

Into the Ardennes

GRAND PRIX REACTION
Spa Saturday header portrait

Concluding the weekend at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Fernando finished P19 while Lance suffered an issue with the AMR26.

Read on to get the full thoughts of our team.

  • After several drivers, including Lance and Fernando, changed components of their cars and subsequently received grid penalties, our duo lined up from P20 and P22.

  • Opting for similar strategies, our drivers both began on the Hard tyre. A Safety Car came out before the end of the first lap and several drivers pitted. When the race got back underway on Lap 5, Fernando and Lance were running in P15 and P16 respectively.

  • A brief Virtual Safety Car period on Lap 18 allowed Lance to pit. Two laps later, Fernando pitted under another VSC. Both drivers changed to Softs.

  • After 25 laps, Lance began to feel a gearbox issue and retired the car to investigate the problem.

  • Fernando came in for his second pitstop at the end of Lap 32, switching to Hards until the end of the race.

  • Next up, on 24-26 July, is the Hungarian Grand Prix, where the team will bring updates to the AMR26.

These sessions are really important for both my development and the team.

"It was great to get out there today and experience my first laps around Spa in a Formula One car. It's a completely different circuit compared to my previous FP1 sessions.

"We know we're not as competitive as we’d like to be at the moment, but we completed the run plan and gathered some valuable data.

It was as expected for us today in Belgium, as we knew this was going to be a difficult track for us.

"It was as expected for us today in Belgium, as we knew this was going to be a difficult track for us.

"Nevertheless, we need to remain sharp and focused and try to do our best this weekend with what we currently have.

"We will continue to prepare properly, make sure we execute everything as we should, and ultimately remain ready for when we have some more competitiveness."

We made a few changes before Qualifying today and improved the car in some areas.

"We made a few changes before Qualifying today and improved the car in some areas.

"We didn't get the perfect tow that we were looking for, though, so there were a few tenths lost there.

"Other than that, the pace was what we were expecting today. We know there's not much to fight for here.

"It's about getting through this weekend and focusing on what's coming in Budapest."

Tomorrow will be about doing everything we can at the highest level.

"It was difficult out there today in Qualifying, but it's as we expected.

"We still try to do our best, and this has been the case over the last 10 races for us.

"We will make sure we maximise everything tomorrow and continue learning what we can to find every bit of performance. Tomorrow will be about doing everything we can at the highest level."

Just one more race and then we can focus on Budapest.

"It's another tough Saturday, but we know this is our situation and we just focussed on delivering a well-executed Qualifying session.

"Tyre preparation was good for both Lance and Fernando, and they both placed their cars well to pick up a tow on their best laps.

"With our current performance level, it won't be an easy race, but we will focus to extract what we can tomorrow.

"Just one more race and then we can focus on Budapest."

Hopefully we can be a bit more competitive in Hungary and have a stronger weekend there.

"Our pace was pretty much where we expected it to be today. We knew this track was always going to be difficult for us and it was a tough race from the start.

"Towards the end I started to feel something with the gearbox, so we retired the car to investigate it.

"Hopefully we can be a bit more competitive in Hungary and have a stronger weekend there."

The focus now shifts to Budapest and introducing a new package for the AMR26.

"It was not an easy afternoon and we did not have the pace to compete, so we simply tried to maximise those things in our control – being strong operationally and delivering the best strategy.

"Fernando completed the race in P19, while Lance reported a car issue on Lap 25 and retired.

"The focus now shifts to Budapest and introducing a new package for the AMR26."

Welcome to your Spa weekend

There is something magical about Spa-Francorchamps. It's perhaps best experienced before the weekend, when the village of Francorchamps is still sleepy, and the memorabilia stalls are just starting to set up on the road down the hill to the circuit. You can see the monstrous climb up the hill through Raidillon, peering through the trees. Monaco may have the glamour, but Spa is the beating heart of F1… even if you do need an umbrella, compass and hiking boots to properly appreciate it. There's 101 years of history at this circuit – and it's just nice to be part of the latest chapter.

Silverstone was a mixed weekend for the team. While the car is still struggling for pace with more performance coming soon, getting both cars home is a testament to the hard work that's going in back at the AMR Technology Campus, and something to build on, heading into the final double-header before the summer break.
