Italian Grand Prix

Taking to the track at the Temple of Speed

ITALIAN GP REACTION
Monza Saturday portrait

An unfortunate weekend at Autodromo Nazionale Monza for our team. Read on for full coverage of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

  • Fernando began the 2025 Italian Grand Prix on the Medium tyre from P8 and gained a position on the opening lap. Opting for the opposite strategy to his teammate, Lance started on the Hard compound from P16.

  • At the end of Lap 20, Fernando made a pitstop for Hards. A few laps later, a suspension failure unfortunately put an end to his race.

  • With just a few laps to go, Lance was running inside the top ten. He made his pitstop at the end of Lap 49, switching to the Soft compound for the final few laps of the race. However, a reliability issue with his pitstop dropped him down the order.

  • Meanwhile in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy member Mari Boya concluded the season by claiming third in the Drivers' standings.

  • After a short break, we'll be making our way to Baku City Circuit for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 19-21 September.

The track, the fans and the energy are really special.

"Good memories racing in Monza and I always enjoy coming back here – the track, the fans and the energy are really special. We've got some good running in today so we now need to look at the data and see what we can do overnight.

"We came here with realistic expectations, the car has its strengths and weaknesses and this is a track where we’re expecting a more challenging weekend than our most recent performance in Zandvoort and Budapest."

We need to try to find more pace overnight.

"It was an okay Friday for us with a lot of grip on this asphalt and these temperatures. We did a mixture of high fuel and low fuel running today and I didn't feel that competitive, so we need to try to find more pace overnight."

We did what we could in Qualifying, but it's just so tight across the whole grid.

"We came to Monza with expectations that this weekend was going to be challenging for us, because this track doesn't suit our car so much.

"We did what we could in Qualifying, but it's just so tight across the whole grid so P17 was the maximum that was in it for us today.

"We'll see what we can do tomorrow and hope for some opportunities we can capitalise on."

Let’s see if we can fight for some points.

"I am happy as we weren't expecting to be in Q3 here in Monza.

"I think the car was much better in Qualifying and the team managed the session well with good tyre preparation and traffic management, which can always be a challenge here.

"It's not a secret that we are slower on the straights, but we are starting in the top 10 tomorrow, so we can be a little more optimistic for the race and let's see if we can fight for some points."

An incredibly tight and competitive Qualifying today in Monza with very fine margins.

"It was an incredibly tight and competitive Qualifying today in Monza with very fine margins.

"The field is very close here and Lance was unfortunate to be eliminated in Q1. The team did a good job of tyre preparation and traffic management, and Fernando did well to make it to P8.

"The atmosphere is one we all love here in Monza, and we will fight hard tomorrow to secure points."

We will look ahead to Baku in two weeks.

"It was always going to be a tough race for us today here in Monza. We managed to make up a few positions with our tyre strategy and staying out long on that first stint.

"Unfortunately, we had some reliability issues during the pitstop at the end of the race and ended up in P18. We were hoping for a Safety Car which could have helped us at the right time to finish just about in the points but there weren't any opportunities. We will look into it and now look ahead to Baku in two weeks."

We've been more competitive lately, so let's see how we go for the remainder of the season.

"The race was going well for us and we were fighting for some points. We started well and had a good pitstop, but then we had to retire due to a suspension failure. We were using the kerbs the same all weekend, so I think it's bad luck that we ended up having to retire.

"It's a shame to lose more points in the Championship, as we were having a good weekend up to then. We've been more competitive lately, so let's see how we go for the remainder of the season."

We will regroup back at the AMRTC and look to bounce back in Baku.

"It was a frustrating day for us with some reliability issues preventing us from battling for the points.

"Fernando did well in his first stint and was running strong in P7. He was then forced to retire his car with a suspension failure.

"Lance drove well and managed a long stint on the Hard tyres. Ultimately, we were hoping for a Safety Car which in the end never came. We then had another reliability issue with his pit-stop, which dropped him down the order.

"We will regroup back at the AMRTC and look to bounce back in Baku."

Enter the Temple of Speed

Monza. One of the fastest circuits on the F1 calendar and one of the most historic. Minimal downforce, blistering speeds, close racing, and a fervent atmosphere created by the passionate tifosi. Lance and Fernando are looking to pick up more points for the team after finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, last time out at Zandvoort.

Monza brings to a close F1's European middle-season tour. We say goodbye to the motorhomes, engineering treehouses and trucks here, and prepare for the long-haul run-in. There's rather more of those flyaway races now than used to be the case, but the tradition of leaving Europe after Monza goes all the way back to the 1950s.

We've also got F2 and F3 parked in the support paddock immediately behind our motorhome this week. Jak Crawford is sitting second in the F2 Championship after a brace of podiums in Hungary. Meanwhile, F3 concludes at Monza. Mari Boya can't catch Rafael Câmara, so his mission this weekend is to secure the P2 he currently holds and end the season on a high. Keep scrolling for an exclusive interview with Mari, one of Spain's most promising young talents, and all you need to know this weekend.

Ascari Chicane is very difficult. It's all about the entry and braking very late. The trick is to brake late but keep momentum.
