Belgian Grand Prix

Valuable learnings in the Ardennes

BELGIAN GP REACTION
Belgian GP Sunday homepage hero portrait

Rain fell on Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps throughout Sunday, resulting in mixed conditions for Round 13 of the 2025 Formula One World Championship.

Read on for full coverage of the Belgian Grand Prix, and get the thoughts of Lance, Fernando and our team following the weekend's sessions.

  • Yesterday, our drivers qualified P19 and P20. Following this, Fernando opted to take a new power unit, resulting in a pit lane start.

  • Due to several drivers taking new power units, Lance began from P16.

  • Poor weather conditions meant a delayed start to the race. After four laps behind the Safety Car to clear water on the track, the race got underway, with our drivers on the Intermediate tyre and the track quickly drying.

  • Fernando made his first pitstop at the end of Lap 11. A lap later, Lance also pitted, both moving onto the Medium tyre. Once all drivers had switched to dry tyres, Fernando was up to P13.

  • On Lap 30, Fernando pitted again for fresh Mediums. Lance chose to continue until the end on his original Mediums.

  • Our drivers concluded the Belgian Grand Prix in P14 and P17.

  • The double-header continues on 1-3 August in Budapest with the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix.

It's great being back in Belgium, I always enjoy it here.

"It's great being back in Belgium, I always enjoy it here. Spa is just one of those tracks that is really special to come back to every year – it's got those high-speed, fast corners where you really feel the car come alive so I'm looking forward to the weekend.

"We managed to get a clean lap in SQ1, SQ2 was a bit more challenging – I had a couple of snaps and also picked up some damage to the floor, so starting the Sprint Race tomorrow from P15. We'll see what we can do."

We were right on the limit, and I gave it everything I had.

"It is always nice to come back to such an iconic track. The weather stayed dry, and SQ1 turned out to be our strongest session. We were right on the limit, and I gave it everything I had. Unfortunately, we couldn't carry that pace into SQ2.

"We were able to test the new front wing, which gave us more downforce. We will continue to keep learning from this new configuration in tomorrow's Sprint race and across the rest of the weekend."

It looks like it's going to rain tomorrow so anything can happen.

"We simply didn't have the pace today and qualified in P20. I'm not too surprised about the result, as we've been struggling with pace all weekend. We'll look into it and see what we can learn. It looks like it's going to rain tomorrow so anything can happen."

I still feel quick in the car, and we'll keep pushing to see what we can do tomorrow.

"This weekend hasn't gone our way so far. We made some set-up changes for the rain, but we just lacked pace today. We need to go back and understand why our package isn't performing here.

"Starting near the back is never easy, and this performance doesn't reflect where we are as a team this season. I still feel quick in the car, and we'll keep pushing to see what we can do tomorrow."

We'll make the most of any opportunities that come our way and fight hard to score points.

"A challenging day here in Spa. We knew heading into the Sprint it would be difficult to score points as both Lance and Fernando started further down the field. Unfortunately, the race then didn't offer any opportunities to move forward.

"In Qualifying, both cars sadly didn't make it out of Q1. While we made slight adjustments to the set-up in anticipation of rain tomorrow, fundamentally we just didn't have the pace today. With a wet race forecast, there's still a lot to play for. We'll make the most of any opportunities that come our way and fight hard to score points."

We did what we could and it was probably the most we could achieve today.

"It's been a tough weekend for us. We did what we could and it was probably the most we could achieve today. We made all the right strategy calls during the race but ultimately we want to finish in the points.

"I'm now looking forward to Budapest in a week's time, it's a very different track and hopefully there will be more opportunities for us."

We will now go back and look at the data to try to find some performance in Hungary.

"Unfortunately, things haven't gone our way this weekend in Belgium. We committed to a wet set-up, but the race ended up being mostly dry and sunny. We managed to make up a few places to finish P17, but our pace still wasn't there. We brought a new package to the circuit, but it hasn't delivered the improvements we were hoping for. We will now go back and look at the data to try to find some performance in Hungary."

Despite the outcome, this weekend has provided valuable learning.

"The Belgian Grand Prix comes to a close after a challenging weekend. We opted to split strategies between the two cars. Lance ran a one-stop race, managing his tyres well to make up six places and finish in P14.

"With Fernando, we opted for a two-stop approach, knowing we had little to lose. Unfortunately, it didn't pay off as we'd hoped. We were planning on a wet race, but the long delay in restarting meant it dried out very quickly, and we were also banking on greater tyre degradation from cars around us.

"Despite the outcome, this weekend has provided valuable learning. We're now focused on the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend, the final race before the summer break."

Welcome to your Spa weekend

The fast, flowing Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps has captivated for decades; one of the sport's spiritual homes, fans from all corners of the globe make the annual pilgrimage to this hallowed circuit. While the track has changed over the course of more than a century, the essence of Spa-Francorchamps remains: it's a high-speed rollercoaster.

We head into the second half of the season – numerically speaking – with Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso on the hunt for more points in the Ardennes. After not having the best of luck at the start of the campaign, Fernando's on a run of four scoring races now, while we recorded our first double-points finish of the season last time out at Silverstone.

This year promises more excitement across the weekend, with the return of the Sprint, and both Formula 2 and Formula 3 on the card. Jak Crawford is coming in hot, with victory in the F2 Feature race at Silverstone and is now second in the championship, just six points off the lead, while Mari Boya celebrated his arrival at the all-new Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy with victory in the F3 feature. We'd love another weekend like the British Grand Prix…

Spa is a combination of very high-speed corners with some very long straights which makes it difficult for the setup.
