In Numbers: 2021 half-term report

Thousands of laps, pushing the limit every kilometre and making history. Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team has broken new ground for Aston Martin on and off the track.

Sebastian Vettel, Portugal

With 11 Grands Prix across multiple continents now complete ahead of the summer break, this feels like a good moment to take a step back and review the season to date.

Starting with the highlight: the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Sebastian’s incredible rise to second from 11th on the grid gave Aston Martin its best-ever result in the Formula One World Championship in its 17th Grand Prix.

It also gave the four-time World Champion his first second-place finish since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix in just his sixth race with the team.

The podium also helped Baku continue its streak of unpredictable races, with a podium trio of Sergio Perez, Sebastian and Pierre Gasly combining to make it seven of the last 15 Azerbaijan podium finishers coming from outside of the top five on the grid.

For Sebastian, it was a charge from 11th to second and a gain of nine places. Across the entire 2021 season, Sebastian has made up a net gain of two places, reflecting the topsy turvy nature of the midfield battle.

He gained the most places in Azerbaijan (nine) Bahrain (five) and Monaco and France (three).

Lance’s net gain of positions so far

Lance has also demonstrated his ability to carve through the field in 2021, surging to a net gain of 22 places from his original grid slots across the 11 races to date.

Almost half of those positions came from an impressive French Grand Prix recovery drive, in which he climbed from 19th to clinch a point in 10th.

Our Canadian star also scored his first-ever Monaco Grand Prix points finish, where he navigated the demanding Monte Carlo streets to rise from 13th to eighth.

Lance's best result in 2021 to date is eighth, a position in which he has now finished four times this season (Emilia Romagna, Monaco, Great Britain and Styria).

Overall, both drivers have underlined the fact the AMR21 is stronger in race conditions. Lance's average starting position is 10th, while his average finishing position is 10th.

Team-mate Sebastian's average grid position is 12th and average finishing position is 11th, although that stat is skewed unfavourably by Sebastian's early races getting to grips with the AMR21.

Discounting the first two races of the season, Sebastian's average finishing position matches that of team-mate Lance.

Eleven races in, it's certainly time for a well-earned break, with the two drivers combining to mean the team has racked up a total of 1,796 laps, completing 8,739 kilometres in the process (5,430 miles).

That's almost the distance between our Silverstone base and New York. And there will only be more to come in the second half of the season.
