I / AM GBR: The soundtrack

Having worked with the likes of Idris Elba, Childish Gambino, Stormzy and more, DJ, songwriter and producer Owen Cutts was the perfect choice to provide the soundtrack to I / AM GBR.

Owen Cutts

Cutts joined Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team at Silverstone for an exclusive event on the lawn of our factory, and we want to share his custom Aston Martin playlist with you.

Through I / AM GBR,  Aston Martin is proudly celebrating British talent and expressions of creativity from all backgrounds.

Owen, also known as Mr Cutts, has worked with some of the most renowned names in music.

His upbringing in London has heavily influenced him, through genres as wide-ranging as blues, soul, rock & roll and the local street-culture around him.

Owen seeks inspiration for his projects from a range of sources, and his most notable works include writing and producing the track One Second feat. HER on the #1 Brit nominated gold record, Heavy Is The Head, by Stormzy.

We sat down with Owen to discuss his career to date, his perspective on I / AM and sharing his creativity.

Tell us a little about your career to date and your passions?

Luckily for me, my passion is my career: I am a songwriter/producer and DJ. Having been obsessed with music from a very early age I feel super fortunate to go to work every day. I started making Hip-Hop/soul in school, and just didn't stop. I recently worked with Stormzy on his last two albums.

What does it mean to be part of Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team's event at Silverstone?

I've always been a fan of James Bond, I've even read the books! So, to me, Aston Martin has always had the coolest cars. To be asked to be a part of the Formula One team was a great honour. I also love anything inherently British, so Aston Martin is up there for me.

Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team champions their fan's self-expression and creativity. As a creator, why do you think this is important?

Creation and expression is a vital part of being a human. I believe music is man's greatest invention. There's something inside us that has the need to create or enjoy creation. There's nothing better than encouraging fans to express themselves creatively. You will see things you'd never see if you just handed them a questionnaire.

As a person in the creative industry in Britain, what do you think makes UK talent unique and what does the music landscape look like in Britain today?

The landscape in British music looks very healthy. The UK has always had the ability to mix and blend genres and influences. We are unafraid to be ourselves. We grow up just trying to impress our friends so your style has to stand out. I think we take that into the world as we grow. We have such a rich heritage and it's just continuing to grow.

Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team's I / AM campaign asks people to 'bring their thing'. What is your thing?

My thing is inclusion, not exclusion. I want to make music that everyone can take something from.

I think thats what soul music does, it includes you immediately.  I / AM INCLUSIVE.

What about Formula One is compelling for you?

I like fast cars so ultimately I love Formula One. I love the margins, one turn out of place means everything.

Owen has an album under the stage name, Mr Cutts, called Carriage 8, as well as a project called Heaven on Earth, coming out 20th August.

You. Us. Together. Collectively we can do something amazing in this team, this sport, and beyond. All in. All welcome. All celebrated.
