We explore Baku and beyond in the build-up to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with our Global Luxury Luggage Partner Globe-Trotter.
This dramatic Formula One season rolls on, and the excitement shows no signs of abating. Now, as the finish of the season comes into sight, the action moves east from Western Europe, with Azerbaijan and Singapore up next.
Azerbaijan is a relative newcomer to Formula One and the world stage, but this small, exciting country has made its mark with a stunning street circuit that dominates the waterfront in the capital, Baku, which is somewhat reminiscent of Dubai on the Caspian Sea coast.
The heart-stopping Baku City Circuit loops around the waterfront and encircles the entirety of the historic Baku Old Town before passing the Government House and running along the prestigious Baku Boulevard, lined with mansions.
It hosted the European Grand Prix for the first time in 2016, and the first ever Azerbaijan Grand Prix took place in 2017 – a race in which Aston Martin Aramco driver Lance Stroll scored his maiden F1 podium. It's a circuit with happy memories for the team, as it's also where Aston Martin took its very first F1 podium in 2021.
Enjoy history in Baku's beautiful Old Town
The historic city walls of Baku enclose a priceless collection of ancient architecture, with buildings that have stood on this site for centuries. Parks provide greenery, and the restored and cleaned buildings reflect a deep appreciation for the city's heritage. Towers, inns, and narrow alleys add depth to the area, making it a pleasant adventure to explore on foot.
On the edge of the Old Town, the Baku Hilton overlooks the ancient buildings and the circuit, featuring a revolving rooftop restaurant and bar. It is an ideal place to stay during the race for F1 fans keen to experience the action up close.
