Shutter Speed: The Hungarian GP in focus

The Hungaroring was the scene for the final Grand Prix before the summer break and provided many opportunities for photographers to get a wide range of impressive pictures.

Between rain, low-light scenes, dramatic racing on the track and even a special helmet, we were treated to some fine photography throughout the weekend.

Join Aston Martin F1 Team and Motorsport Images photographer Zak Mauger as he explains the details behind his favourite shots from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

"Even with all the technological advances in Formula One, the pitboard still plays an important part in how teams manage a driver’s race.

"I have intentionally focused on the pitboard and kept Sebastian out of focus as he rounds the final corner, to almost lead your eye through the image."

"Using a slow shutter speed on a telephoto lens can be quite tricky – the unwritten rule amongst motorsport photographers is that the helmet has to be sharp.

"This is shot at 1/10th of a second as Lance goes through Turn 12. I like this kind of shot as it highlights the speed of these cars and creates an almost painting-like effect."

"This is just after Lance had arrived on the grid. I used a 50mm lens and a narrow aperture to focus on his hand pulling off his balaclava."

"I could spend quite a bit longer on the grid in Hungary as I did not have far to walk for my race position.

"As I had a few more simple angles in the bank earlier on, I thought I would go for something a bit different. I have used the rear wing to frame Sebastian as he jumped back in to the car."

"I know from previous wet sessions in Hungary that the bridge after the first corner creates a dramatic explosion of spray.

"I positioned myself here for the wet Free Practice Three session to create this impactful image."

"Sebastian has had a lot of special helmets over the years, but I particularly liked this one with the little brick version of himself on the back. Using a 24mm lens and a wide-open aperture, I have tried to highlight the fun nature of the design.

"Using an aluminium work bench in the back of the truck creates quite a cool makeshift studio, too."
