Baffled by Boost Mode? Overwhelmed by Overtake Mode? And what actually is Active Aero? Build up your F1 vocab with these essential definitions for 2026 and beyond.
Hello BRO.
Boost. Recharge. Overtake.
There's a new lexicon to learn as F1's regulations get a reboot for 2026.
Navigating the world of F1 can be overwhelming, with new phrases, terms, and acronyms popping up all the time. The biggest regulation change in the sport's history has thrown up some more – but what do they mean, and why do they matter?
These are the words and terms to know to stay ahead. This is the new language of F1.
OVERTAKE MODE
What it does:
Available when a driver is within one second of the car ahead, Overtake Mode allows extra power to be deployed to help complete a pass.
Why it matters:
Replacing DRS, it is a strategic tool that can be used all at once or managed across a lap, rewarding timing and judgement.
BOOST MODE
What it does:
A driver-operated energy deployment tool from the Energy Recovery System (ERS) that delivers maximum power from the engine and battery at the push of a button, anywhere on track.
Why it matters:
Boost Mode can be used offensively to attack or defensively to hold position, putting control directly in the driver's hands.

ACTIVE AERO
What it does:
Adjustable front and rear wing elements switch between Corner and Straight modes in specific high-speed sections.
Why it matters:
Active Aero improves grip when needed, such as through corners, and reduces drag on straights, allowing drivers to fully exploit the car's performance.
RECHARGE
What it does:
Energy is recovered through braking, lifting at the end of straights and even through corners where partial power is used.
Why it matters:
Recharging enables drivers to build energy for later use, adding another strategic layer to every lap.

Need a refresher on the regulation reboot? We've got you.
Here's what's changing for 2026:
Chassis and aerodynamics
Wheelbase reduced by 200mm (to 3400mm), width by 100mm (to 1900mm), floor width cut by 150mm and minimum weight down 30kg (to 770kg).
Overall downforce reduced by ~15-30 per cent from removed ground-effect floor tunnels.
Overall drag reduced by up to 40 per cent.
Movable front and rear wings replace Drag Reduction System (DRS) for high and low downforce configurations.
18-inch wheels remain, but front tyres are 25mm narrower with rears 30mm narrower.
Power unit
Shift to approximately 50 per cent internal combustion (ICE) and 50 per cent electric power.
MGU-H removed; MGU-K power increased significantly (120kW to 350kW).
Cars will run on advanced sustainable fuel.
