1 | You need to believe in yourself

"95 per cent of being a Formula One driver is mental, and five per cent is physical. Like any sport, you need to be physically prepared, but you have to have that confidence and belief in yourself.

"I'm always curious about how I can be better mentally and technically and refine my process going into the weekends.

"I love the mental work and the psychology around sports and racing. I think there's different chapters in your career. There's times when everything's very clear and simple and you have it all figured out, and there's times when it's not so clear and not so simple and you have to change the way you go about things.

"Consistent mental work is key to getting the most out of yourself. That process is what's been important for me."

It's in those hard moments, in those tough times, that we learn the most about ourselves.

2 | Greatness comes from growth

"We can talk about the podiums and the pole, but let's talk about the losses. I think that's where you learn the most about yourself to grow from those tough moments. I think that's where you really grow as a person, as an athlete, as a driver, from those struggles.

"I want every day to be great and perfect, but that's just not the reality of sport. In sports, in anything in life that you pursue, there's going to be those highs and those lows. You have to accept that before you even go into it. Before every season, I think to myself, 'There's going to be good days and bad days and I have to accept that now.'

"We all love the champagne celebrations. But it's really in those hard moments, in those tough times, that we really learn the most about ourselves and we grow."

3 | Appreciate every moment

"I think we're all guilty of not enjoying good moments enough, and the next thing comes up and it's like, 'OK, we're onto that.' But it's nice to reflect and smell the roses sometimes and just enjoy the journey.

"Sometimes you're not in that position to put it on pole. The car's not quick enough and you qualify 10th, but you know inside that it was everything. Those days feel good too.

"The greatness comes from the preparation, the teamwork and everything that goes into those moments. The outcome and the result are special and feel amazing, but it's about everything that goes on behind the scenes leading up to those moments."

To get the most out of yourself, you need to get the most out of the people around you.

4 | Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from

"People are going to try and bring you down and tell you that you can't do it, but you've just got to stay in your lane, keep believing and keep grinding.

"I try to live in my world and not the world, in that sense. There's always going to be criticism. You have a couple of good races, you're great; you have a couple bad ones, you suck. That's never going to change, and that's why I think being surrounded by important people and valuing the opinion of people that you care about is so important. Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from.

"I'm very fortunate to have people around me who support me when I'm dwelling on what happened last weekend. They're pulling my arm and saying, 'New race, new opportunity. Let's get it.'"

5 | Communication is key

"Communication is fundamental in our sport. To get the most out of yourself, to get the most out of the car, you need to get the most out of the people around you and really lean into what everyone around you can bring to help you succeed.

"A lot of that is set-up work, spending the time away from the track to have a chat with everyone at the factory and understand how the car's evolving, how to get more out of the car, how we can make changes to do that.

"It's all those moments and all that communication when I'm outside the car that I think is what really makes a difference.

"When you have everything you want behind the wheel, that's when you can get the most out of yourself."
